.John Michael Thomas was born in 1951 in Washington Court House, Ohio, a small town off I-71 between Cincinnati and Columbus. The second-youngest of nine children, he grew up with a great admiration for the United States military, and in 1969 he went into the United States Marines, where he served until 1978. A year after his departure from the marines, John Michael joined the United States Navy, and stayed with them until his retirement in 1991.
